About the service we provide

Deed poll

As part of our service we will:

  • draw up your deed poll and post it to you with detailed instructions on how to execute it (sign and witness it)
  • give you guidance on who to update your records with, and specific information for each organisation where relevant
  • write you a personalised cover letter to send to organisations together with your deed poll, professionally formatted as a Word document (we'll send this to you by e‑mail so you can print it out as many times as you need to)
  • order application forms to update your passport and driving licence from the IPS / DVLA
  • give you personal advice and answer any queries you may have

For child applications we will also:

  • work out who has parental responsibility for your child and who has to give their consent to the change of name
  • prepare a cover letter justifying how you have parental responsibility under the law (we'll also send this to you as a Word document)

How to apply

Our application form is very clear and simple, and it will guide you to fill in all the correct information we need to process your application. We will then prepare the correct documents you need to legally change your name.

You can use your deed poll to update all your official documents in your new name, such as your passport, driving licence, bank account, and so on. Deed polls issued by the Deed Poll Office are guaranteed to be accepted by all government bodies and other organisations in the U.K.

Note that a deed poll is not the only way of changing your name, and — depending on your situation — you may not need a deed poll.

If you need any help

Our site contains detailed information about legally changing your name. If you have any questions, or you would like more personal advice, you can get in touch with our support service, and a deed poll officer will be glad to help you.

Please note that we do not provide a service that helps you trace your family tree — the deed polls we issue are private documents, and our records are not available for public inspection. For further information about searching for historical changes of name, you can read about other possible sources of historical records, or else get in touch with a genealogist.
